Football, Basketball and Baseball are the American sports. Soccer not so much, but why are Americans Googling European soccer all the time?

Yesterday was another round of the European Champions League. Bayern Munich turned a 0:2 into a 4:2 in a dramatic finish. European soccer is popular in many countries outside of Europe. American sport fans are commonly believed not to be interested in soccer. They love their Football, Basketball and Baseball.

Over the past months I spotted a reoccurring pattern on Google’s Insights for Search. I am using the Google Trends tool on a regular basis to find leads for stories. I am often stumped by European soccer stories ranking top for the United States region. Right now queries around Arsenal rank #1 and Lionel Messi, Neymar and FC Barcelona are the second most popular search term.

I see European soccer queries on a regular basis ranking top, not just after a Champions League game day. Right now European soccer outranks Saint Patrick’s Day and the Chicago White Sox.

Either Google’s data is flawed or Americans have a secret love for European soccer. If the data is not skewed than it is time for Americans to come out and tell the world that they are into soccer. Yesterday Bayern Munich made it also into the overall search trends of the day at rank #7 and Barcelona vs Arsenal ranked #4.
