Judicial District Court Candidate, Fredricka Phillips Meets Houston Nigerian Community

Attorney Fredricka Phillips, candidate for the 61st Judicial District Court in Harris County will be hosted to a fundraising reception and town hall meeting by the Nigerian American for justice, led by Houston-based attorney, James Okorafor. The event is set for Friday, September 30, 2016, at 10101 Fondren Road, Suite 105, in Houston. Event time is 6-9 p.pm.

Attorney  Okorafor said his group would schedule similar events with other judicial candidates to allow them audience with community members in other to address pressing civic issues. Participants would meet face-to-face with the candidate, Fredricka Phillips to learn more about her candidacy, and to share their thoughts on law and judicial enforcements.

A series of controversial events of the past within the community have inspired greater interests in the civil court system. People are now realizing that this election is beyond Hillary and Trump, but extends to other areas that might have direct impact to their lives, families, and businesses. The 61st Civil District Court is a court of general jurisdiction for resolving civil disputes in which the amount in controversy is $200 or more involving property, contract disputes, and other civil matters in which jurisdiction is not placed in another trial court. According to attorney Okorafor, “our people want to support candidates whose values serve our interests, and that is why I am hosting this event,”

Attorney Phillips, a lawyer and community activist is licensed to practice law in all Texas state courts, the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Northern, and Southern Districts of Texas, and the US Fifth Circuit. She has always used her legal expertise to give back to her community. She has volunteered her time over the past years in pro bono activities with the Houston Bar Association, the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program and served as an Election Protection volunteer lawyer for the 2008 election cycle.

Attorney Phillips has been so far endorsed by major community leaders and elected officials, including; Rev. William A. Lawson, Pastor Emeritus of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Hon. James Douglas, NAACP Houston President, State Representatives Senfronia Thompson, State Representative Alma Allen, State Representative Borris Miles, and State Representative Harold Dutton.

According to Attorney Phillips, “Justice demands fairness. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you look like, whom you choose to love, or where you come from, our judicial system must be fair. That is why I am running to become the next Judge for the 61st Judicial District Court in Harris County.”
