Nigerian-American for Justice endorses Judicial District Court candidate, Fredricka Phillips – pledges comprehensive get-out-to-vote drive

International Guardian, Houston, Texas – Friday, September 30, 2016, Attorney Fredricka Phillips, candidate for the 61st Judicial District Court in Harris County was hosted to a fundraising reception and town hall meeting by the Nigerian community where she received tremendous support and endorsement.

Nigerian American for justice led by Houston-based attorney, James Okorafor organized this event in the form of a town hall meeting, to interact with this candidate on her manifestoes. A series of controversial events of the past within the community have inspired greater interests in the civil court system. People are now realizing that this election is beyond Hillary and Trump, but extends to other areas that might have direct impact to their lives, families, and businesses.

Phillips decried the demographics differences in the County’s court structures, where African-Americans have a very minimal representation, and elaborated on the need to have more Black and minority judges on the bench. Attorney Okorafor equally agreed that a demographic balance is needed in the court system to strengthen the quality of justice delivery.

In his own submission, Dr. Raymond Sowemimo, Board Chairman of  The Nigerian Foundation, Inc. endorsed Phillip’s candidacy, pledging to mobilize necessary resources to encourage poll participation in the community. Currently, Dr. Sowemimo overseas a massive voter-registration exercise, targeting new voters and unregistered eligible voters.

The 61st Civil District Court is a court of general jurisdiction for resolving civil disputes in which the amount in controversy is $200 or more involving property, contract disputes, and other civil matters in which jurisdiction is not placed in another trial court. James Okorafor said his group would schedule similar events with other judicial candidates to allow them audience with community members in other to address pressing civic issues

Besides fairness in the judicial system, Attorney Phillips versatility and success in the law practice make her a credible contender for this office, it is observed. As a lawyer, her practice covers a wide variety of legal areas with particular emphasis in civil litigation and property law. Fredericka is licensed to practice law in all Texas state courts, the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Northern, and Southern Districts of Texas, and the US Fifth Circuit. She has represented both individuals and businesses as plaintiffs and defendants in a broad range of cases including personal injury and medical malpractice disputes, commercial disputes, construction defect, toxic tort, insurance coverage disputes, collections, employment, divorce and custody cases, probate matters, and real estate matters.

Furthermore, Attorney Phillips has been so far endorsed by major community leaders and elected officials, including; Rev. William A. Lawson, Pastor Emeritus of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Hon. James Douglas, NAACP Houston President, State Representatives Senfronia Thompson, State Representative Alma Allen, State Representative Borris Miles, and State Representative Harold Dutton.
